Last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Liana Cordell, Creator and Designer of Pelican Sleepwear.

The label is fairly new to the growing sleepwear market, having launched their first collection only last year, but unlike other PJ’s out there, I could quite confidently venture outside in some of these pieces.

An interest in garment construction plus the frustration of not being able to find suitable bed attire, led Liana to launch the label, who’s collections offer a selection of classic and fashionable sleepwear and loungewear, which is also made in Melbourne!

Simple, & Comfortable, without compromising style. What could be better?

Check out the new Pelican Sleepwear collection here, and my interview with Liana below!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Pelican Sleepwear came about.
Believe it or not I never used to wear pyjamas.  My night-time wardrobe consisted of either what I wore that day or an old pair of trackies and an even older singlet. I never used to care about pyjamas because I didn’t see anything that I liked enough to care about! The button up matching set and the quirky prints and colours never really did it for me. Plus, whenever I bought a pair of pyjama pants they would just shrink 5 sizes in the wash anyway. I couldn’t bring myself to step out of my nice day outfit and completely disregard everything I love about fashion just because it’s night-time.

I originally completed a bachelor in Exercise Science, but as much as I enjoyed studying it, by the end of the course I knew that it wasn’t a career I wanted to pursue. I had always been a crafty, hands-on sort of person and had this fascination with clothing – more specifically, how a flat sheet of fabric could be turned into just about any garment you wanted. So I enrolled in a pattern making and garment construction night course which I absolutely loved. From there, I knew I wanted to create something of my own and when I really started to look at the lack of diversity within the sleepwear industry I felt like I could introduce something that was a fresh alternative.

What inspires your design and creative decisions?
Reading magazines definitely wakes my creative side up. Often I will be reading Vogue and gazing upon their editorials or the high fashion images of bloggers and think “Man that jacket is cool, I wonder if I could turn it into a dressing gown?

But sometimes an idea can just come to you. When I’m driving long distances I often just have things pop into my head which I need to then describe into the recorder on my phone so I don’t forget.

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m definitely a minimalist. I like to wear one statement piece of clothing and then down-play the rest of the outfit.

What are 5 essentials in your wardrobe?
1. Jeans, a black blazer, a plain white or grey t-shirt, really comfy yet equally awesome black heels, and a huge scarf.

Who are some of the people that inspire you and why?
From a fashion perspective, I have  really enjoyed Victoria Beckham’s collections. it took me by surprise, I guess I never took her out of the Spice Girl category, but when she brought out her label it was just full of sharp, tailored, elegant pieces that couldn’t be further from her Spice Girl days. I also am a fan of Cate Blanchett and Diane Kruger, I love the way they dress it’s so feminine and sets a really good example for younger women to show them that they don’t need to bare all to look good. But with social media being so saturated with fashion these days, it’s so easy to draw inspiration from everyone.

From a brand perspective, it’s hard not to be inspired by Steve Jobs. It’s incredible how well he was able to articulate his brand’s vision – you can’t have loyal followers like he does without that vision, I think it just goes to show how inspiring change only comes through good leadership. I also love Lorna Jane Clarkson’s story and how she built her Lorna Jane brand from scratch purely through word of mouth. I guess it gives me hope that it is possible to create big change out of something small.

If you could design sleepwear for anyone in the world, who would it be?
My biggest inspiration is every young woman in Australia. If I’m not designing for them then it’s not worth doing.

What are the top 3 resources which you turn to for inspiration?
The start of the month is always handy for inspiration because that’s when all of my magazine subscriptions get delivered! Fabric shopping is also helpful. Other than that, I just design for what I would want to wear to bed or what makes me feel good, because often I can’t find it anywhere.

What is the best place to shop in Melbourne?
To be honest, I’m a big online shopper. I have almost grown to resent physically going shopping, however there are some great spots on Brunswick St that offer you something different to the big chain stores.

What is next for the label? Where do you see the brand going in the future?
I would love to be able to keep making ranges and grow the brand’s profile and stock in stores. I have this dream of one day walking into a Pelican Sleepwear office with a team of about 5 people just creating awesome stuff and loving their jobs and having fun at work. That’s ultimately what I would want for the brand.

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to start his or her own business in fashion?
I have plenty of advice, but here’s my top 3:

1. Know what you want to do inside and out. If someone asks you what your business is all about, you should be able to reel off a sentence or 2 summing up your vision that just puts any other questions to bed

2. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small. Because those lows can be pretty low.

3. Find a way to always move forward. If something goes wrong, have a cry for 10 minutes then say “right, how do I make this work?”

Wishlist – Valentine’s Day

DREAM OUTFIT VALENTINES DAY

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY LOVERS!

I’m not really a big “celebrator” of Valentine’s day. I don’t really have anything against it, but I’ve never really made a big deal about it either.  However, what I do love is occasional dressing, and putting together my little fashion wish lists in the form of visual boards.  So let’s pretend I do celebrate Valentine’s day and let’s also pretend that I have somewhere real fancy to be tonight.

Nothing screams Valentine’s day to me more than some beautiful lingerie, a scarlet dress and a few hearts thrown in for good measure.

Gorman – Autumn 2014

Gorman 01Winter Harvest

I can’t believe that on a day which will be reaching 29 degrees I am going to discuss autumn fashion.  But alas, the autumn collections have begun to hit the shops and I really cannot go past talking about …THIS

Gorman is without a doubt one of my absolutely favourite shops to visit (quite frequently).  It is their playful prints which always have me running back for more, and this season’s AMAZING “Winter Harvest” print has my name all the freak over it!

Check out the rest of the collection here.

Trend Spotting – La Vie en Rose

TREND SPOTTING LA VIE EN ROSE

Pastel pink has had a major comeback in fashion. It’s such a simple way to bring a touch of romance to an outfit.  I’ve found that this colour can wash me out a bit so I’ll probably only be experimenting with the trend in the form of accessories or bottoms, but man I wish I could pull of that jumper.

I usually like to publish posts like these in advance to an exhibition’s commencement, so I can give people a chance to visit it. But unfortunately I was only able to visit the Bendigo Art Gallery, on the last weekend of the Modern Love Exhibit.

However I  still wanted to share some photographs from our little outing. I apologise for the darkness of the photographs as we were not allowed to use lights or flash.

Hope you enjoy. xo Luciana

I freaking love Karen Walker, and her refreshing take on the label’s fashion campaigns! Who can forget the Karen Walker Forever Collections.

And this season I appreciate the campaign even more as Karen Walker is working with the United Nations’ ITC Ethical Fashion Initiative, in creating work for community groups in urban slums and disadvantaged rural areas of Kenya.

Every pair of Karen Walker Eyewear from this collection will come with screen printed pouches made by the artisans who are also the models and stars of this wonderful collaboration!

Late last year, I was rushing around Melbourne Central and whizzed past a new little store which caught my eye. I wasn’t able to have a peek inside at the time, since I was running late for an appointment, but committed the cute and colourful space to memory, which I later found out was the Limedrop pop-up shop.

I’ve been checking out Limedrop online for a while, but this past Sunday I finally got the chance to visit the pop-up shop to have a chat with Clea Garrick, Director and Designer of the label.

Nesting under a cluster of bright rainbow umbrellas, the small space carries an impressive array of goodies which are all designed and developed in the Limedrop Fitzroy studio.

I’ve always known Limedrop for their beautiful garments and bright electric digital prints (which are also designed in-house), but was incredibly impressed by the variety of accessories they offer, ranging from flirty floral head pieces & sparkly earrings, to organic cherrywood and rosewood accessories

What really caught my eye (pardon the pun) were the incredibly awesome “Funglasses” which really take the Limedrop “Live Life in Full Colour” motto to another level.  And the translucent marbled resin and sustainably grown “Rosewood Necklace” (which I could not resist).

Make sure you rush down to visit the store at Melbourne Central before the 9th February (the pop up shop closes it’s doors this Sunday) – But never fear If you cannot get to the store before then, you can check out all these wonderful pieces online at the Limedrop Wesbite

Thank you Clea for a wonderful morning! Check out my interview with the lovely lady below.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Limedrop came about?

Limedrop started as an idea that anything is possible. It’s aim is to bring positivity and hope to our lives by offering beautiful, unique items to adorn ourselves and our lives with. Our motto is the spirit of possibilities. We want to inspire others to do the things that inspire them. Our products add the confidence, strength and fun!

I love creating and had a dream to create a fashion label.  By the time I was in high school, I was running my own market at the “Beachside Sunset Market” in tropical Darwin. I relocated to Brisbane to study marketing and completed my Bachelor of Fashion Design. Limedrop was born in Melbourne in 2006 when my former business partner and I set up our Fitzroy studio and designed our first range. Over the next six years, we built our label showing at “Australian Fashion Week”, fashion festivals around the country, showcases in Japan and China, and growing our customer base through our presence in multi-brand boutiques, pop-up shops, designer markets and collaborations. Mid 2012, I took over the directorship of Limedrop and was invited to showcase in London, Dubai, Beijing and Istanbul for the “Women in International Business Forums” in 2012, 2013 and 2014. I launched our 5th Pop Up Shop in Melbourne Central and have enjoyed connecting with our customers directly through the store, social media and designer markets. It still feels unbelievable that this is all possible!

What inspires your design and creative decisions?
I am inspired by lots of different disciplines and creativity in general. I find it exciting to push past where we have been before.  Also rainbows have been a personal obsession of mine for the past few years, which definitely seem to be sneaking into the Limedrop collections.

How would you describe your personal style?
My motto is to live actively and glamorously, whilst pursuing my creative dreams and sharing rainbows!

How What are 5 essentials in your wardrobe?
1. My Limedrop “Look a Million Dollars” dress. It’s made of gold coins, it’s amazing! / 2. My “Floral Drawstring Hat” / 3. A good pair of heels, although I am probably tall enough! / 4. A good pair of runners, currently my colourful New Balances / 5. My “Magic Eye Quilt Silk Bomber”

What is the best place to shop in Melbourne?
The Limedrop pop up shop of course! (until the 9th February). I am also a fan of Flinders Lane & Brunswick St – they have some really cool shops.

Who are some of the people that inspire you and why?
I don’t really have a specific person who inspires me. Recently, we have opened the Limedrop studio to new desks, and the girls who are there at the moment are incredibly inspiring. They are all businesswomen who are pursuing their creative dreams and I find that to be really inspirational.

If you could design a garment for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Lorde because she is just a cool girl with a lot of talent…. and Katy Perry! because she is an independent and powerful woman. I find her funny and cringe worthy most of the time, but there’s something charming about that.

Who What is next for the label? Where do you see the brand going in the future?
We have lots of plans for Limedrop’s future.  We are heading to Dubai later this month to visit one of our new stockists, as well as visiting Istanbul for the “Women in International Business Forum” which is part of the “Victorian Super Trade Mission”. We are so excited as we have been asked to be a part of the Victorian showcase for the fourth time.  We’ve also had a lot of interest in the US market, especially with our “Funglasses” and definitely looking to open a flagship store in Melbourne.

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to start his or her own business in fashion?
I have lots of advice, where do I begin?  Think about your dreams, and where you want to be.  Make sure you celebrate all the little wins along the way.  I am the ultimate optimist, and always try to look at the positive side of things. I must drive my mum crazy! Because I am always working hard and no matter how tough things are I see a reason to keep going.  But when you’re crazily trying to build something, it’s important to stop and celebrate all the little wins along the way.  Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it!!! (Although I would probably tell you not to! ….As long as you know it’s not all champagne and parties, but luckily there is a bit of that ::)
