Over the weekend I attended the most wonderful Florography class at The School run by the incredibly inspiring Ashley Woodson Bailey.
For those of you who have not yet learned of Ashley, she is a Texan artist who has taken Instagram by storm (you absolutely must follow her here)
During the class she shared a story with us that totally touched my heart… Living in Texas, Ashley worked as a florist, but that all changed when she was in a car accident, that left her badly damaged with a broken back and saw her wearing a back-brace for 7 months (you can read the story in her own words here)
In an instant her life changed dramatically, all of the things she had worked so hard for slipped away from her, clients and projects moved on and she could not continue the very physical work of floristry.
Unable to do anything physical, and essentially house bound, Ashley found a way to continue her love affair with flowers in the form of photography. Armed with only her iPhone and Afterlight app she now creates the most beautiful artworks reminiscent of the work of the Dutch Masters, soft, moody and filled with shadows and light.
The class itself was a lot of fun. Shooting away at floral arrangements and then playing around with Afterlight to get the desired effects. Below are some of my finished photographs. I feel like this is going to become a very addictive new hobby of mine.
