An interview with Amelia Lamont – The Midwife Mumma

Amelia Lamont , also known as The Midwife Mumma, is a mum of 3, midwife and business entrepreneur from Melbourne.

Her experience in all things, birth, babies and motherhood as well as her honest and candid demeanour has earned her over 100k followers on Instagram.

Initially co-founding ‘Baby Sleep School’ I started following Amelia when Jeanie was a baby and have continued to enjoy her daily posts on all things motherhood.

Her hilarious nature and informative posts are a combination that always keep me coming back for more.

From tips on breastfeeding, sleep & helpful products, to sharing her experience of daily family life and relationships, it’s her sincere and raw take on life that sets her apart from the ‘too-perfect’ mummy sphere that we often see online.

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Amelia as we discuss her business @themidwifemumma, how on earth she juggles it all, and what exciting things she has coming up. Read on below.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to launch ‘The Midwife Mumma’.

After Alfie was born I had several friends and friends of friends asking for random midwife and sleep help… anything from breastfeeding to settling to bathing to cooking.. the works.

I couldn’t keep up with the demand so it made sense to start an online platform that I could share my knowledge on wider scale and help as many mumma’s as possible.

I absolutely adore following you for all things motherhood and general life.  Can you tell us more about your work in general and what is important to you as a business and content creator?

My work is never ending haha.. When I am not being a snack bitch to my kids or feeding Coco I am running around birth suite caring for patients watching new babies come into the world and if I am not there I am at home replying to my overflowing Instagram inbox and writing content for the next post.

What does a typical day of motherhood / business / life look like for you?

Busy busy busy!! We always start off at full steam ahead… get the kids up.. dressed for school / kinder / childcare.. quick brekky then drop 3 kids off and home to emails.. content creation and then house work!! Throughout the day I regularly post to Insta, check DM’s and reply to them and school pick up and repeat… There is never a dull moment and rare that I am not on the phone creating or responding to someone.. on average, I work for 7 hours a day on my phone.. sad but true!!

Tell us about some of the people in the Industry or motherhood/baby space who inspire you and why.

Ohhh where do I start.. there are so many!! Some of the accounts I have followed forever that have turned their platform into successful businesses are Sam Wood, Snuggle Hunny Kids, Tiny Harlow, Gaia, Babymat… there are loads!! All of the above started small and are now huge.. they are all really inspiring in the baby space.

You’re a mother of 3, and a midwife by trade so you’re the perfect person to ask this question.  What are some of your top tips in prepping for a new baby and motherhood?

Stay as relaxed as possible.. easier said then done but our babies completely feed off our energy and if we are anxious it is going to make for an unsettled baby… in the lead up to birth make sure you get yourself some super comfy leggings that will support your tummy post bub and also loads of sudocream, nipple cream and a good breast pump.  Stock your freezer full of meals and perhaps even book yourself a weekly clean.

What are your recommended 5 essentials for soon to be mums?

1. a good breast pump – medela swing is brilliant.

2. sudocream.. their little bums are so fragile.. this will be a god send if their little bottom becomes sore or irritated.

3. 5 REALLY good big swaddles.  These are a necessity.  Always swaddle your baby for all naps.

4. a light weight pram.. don’t bother with the bulky exes ones on the market that everyone uses!! Honestly you can get a brilliant pram for $600.

5. Hydrogel breast discs.. these are life changing in the early days of breast feeding and so under rated.

Motherhood can be beautiful, tricky, exhausting and the most amazing thing ever all wrapped into one. Yet we don’t often talk about the real truths of learning to become a mother. What are some of your ‘truths’ when it comes to motherhood?

That is isn’t always enjoyable.  That you get burnt out quicker than you realise.  Your exhaustion is nothing that you have ever experienced before.  The best advice is ALWAYS tell someone close to you how you are feeling. Even if it is a little bit sad or flat.  Voice it.  See your GP. Most of the time they reassure you it’s normal but on the off chance it isn’t you are already one step ahead.  Mental health is priority in motherhood.

What is some of the best advice you have received as a soon to be/new mum?

Never compare your baby.  NOT one baby is the same as the next.  Focus on your baby and don’t worry what milestone the next is up to or how they are sleeping. Speaking of sleep… even if your bub isn’t sleeping well right now, in time they will.

What’s next for The Midwife Mumma?

Watch this space… I have just joined a mammoth baby company as Co-Founder… This will be announced really soon!! Also stay tuned for many more guides to come to help any parent through parenthood.
