17 things to do while stuck at home

As promised today I am sharing some ideas for things to do while were all stuck safely at home.

We are all so used to the hustle and bustle of life that sometimes it is hard to sit still. Having said that I do hope that this time teaches us all the importance of rest, and of a slower pace of living with our loved ones.

For now I hope the following ideas and activities help you to get through the months ahead.

Lots of love x Luciana

TAKE CARE

Get Active

It is so important now that we are bound to our homes for most of our days that we keep our bodies healthy and active. If you need to get out of the house and take in some fresh air, it is ok to head outside. Go for a walk or run, but please keep your distance from others. Alternatively, there are a bunch of amazing online resources that you can sign up for to exercise at home. Things like body weight exercises, yoga, pilates and barre (that’s B.A.R.R.E) 😉

Practice mindfulness

I’m not ‘good’ at practicing mindfulness. My mind buzzes and whirs all throughout my meditation sessions, but I do still find it incredibly grounding, calming and see many benefits in practicing daily. I highly recommend it to everyone and anyone. I use the App Headspace as it has courses for all types of themes like managing anxiety, work productivity, personal growth, relationships, sports performance and so much more. They also have a great selection of sleep-casts, stories and noises that can gently lull you to sleep if your mind is feeling busy at the end of the day.

TIME OUT

Have a DIY Spa Day/Facial

I’ll be doing a whole separate post on this soon, so stay tuned. You can still have a little bit of luxury at home when in self isolation. If you are lucky enough to have a bath, then go all out! Get the candles out, pop some bubbles in and relax the day or night away.

If you live in a smaller space a DIY facial or mani-pedi can also lift the spirits and clear the mind.

Read a book

Never has there been a better time to take some time out and indulge in a bit of escapism in the form of reading. To me reading is a form of meditation. When watching TV it is still easy to be distracted and lost in your own thoughts. But when you’re stuck into a juicy book it is fully immersive. Get swept off into another world/time/space and start ticking off that reading list we all have and never get through.

Get out in the garden

I’m really looking forward to this one. We’re lucky that we have a big garden that needs a lot of love at our new place to keep us busy over the next few weeks. However even if you only have a small space, or live in an apartment you can still grow some produce. Weather that means a veggie garden that you can harvest in the coming months, or a few window sill herbs that you can use for yummy home cooked meals. If you want a fuss free garden feature why not propagate or plant some lovely succulents and cactus instead?

RELATIONSHIPS

Video chat with a friend

In times like this when the world feels uncertain and strange, it is always nice to reach out and to also hear from friends. A little hello goes a long way and checking in with each other is a great way to ensure we all get through these unprecedented times together.

Don’t have time for a long chat? Make a small little video for a friend or family member and send it to them to brighten up their day.

Write a letter to a loved one
We’re all now stuck safely at home, keeping ourselves as busy or un-busy as possible. Wouldn’t it be nice to receive a thoughtful letter in the mail instead of just bills?

Do this test with your partner

A few years back Grange and I did an online questionnaire named “36 Questions that lead to love”. It sounds incredibly cheesy and it did end with us having to stare into each other’s eyes for 4 minutes in silence, but it’s such an interesting exercise to do with your partner.

You’ll discuss and learn things about each other that you might otherwise not know, and you’ll come out of it feeling closer together. I honestly couldn’t recommend it enough. Don’t we all need a bit of closeness and intimacy in times like these?

Make a playlist to share with your friends

A photographer that I work with usually sends all his clients a big playlist of songs he’s been loving though out the year. I just love receiving it every December and I think it’s such a neat idea. Remember the days of burning CD’s or making cassettes for your friends? Well now you can do it from the comfort of your own home on Spotify or Apple Music.

ENTERTAINMENT

Read your favourite blogs

I couldn’t not add this one to the list! Jump online and spend 30 mins each day catching up on your favourite blogs.

Watch a great documentary or movie

Sometimes all you want to do is veg out in front of the TV, and that’s totally ok! Watching a great movie can do wonders, and bonus points if you watch a documentary and you learn some new things.

Play a board game or do a puzzle

Don’t knock it till you try it. Seriously! In the last couple of years I’ve really gotten into playing board games with friends. Its such a great way to connect and have a laugh, and the perfect family activity if you have kids.

It’s not just monopoly that’s out there either. There are so many amazing, fun and creative games out there. We’ve been playing Splendor non-stop.

Maybe a daily crossword, sudoku or jigsaw puzzle can be just the break you need. Only please buy your puzzles online.

ORGANIZE

Clean out your closet

Cleaning out and organising my closet always makes me feel accomplished and happy. I even wrote a post about it many years a go that you can find HERE.

Do that one thing you’ve been putting off forever

Is it cleaning the ‘junk room’? Bookwork? Fixing the broken tile? Whatever it maybe perhaps now is the time to do that one thing you’re always putting off. Mine is definitely tidying up my spare room!

SKILL UP

Try a new recipe

I personally love cooking with my husband. We’ll often have people over for weekend lunches or dinners. However, because we are all now practicing responsible social distancing, this means we won’t be hosting one of these get-togethers for a while, but that doesn’t mean we can’t treat ourselves with a decedent or comforting meal.

The silver lining is that we now have time to try that yummy cake recipe or spend a few hours perfecting a delicious intricate dinner.

Play an instrument / learn a song

I’m not going to lie. I have a guitar and ukulele gathering dust in my spare room. I haven’t played them in years and yes, I miss it.

Playing an instrument can be such a rewarding and joyful experience but it does take time to learn and master. So, if you now find yourself with plenty of time, maybe give learning a few songs a go. Ukuleles in particular can be fairly inexpensive at entry level and it’s easy to learn a few chords to get you on the way.

Get creative

There are so many resources out there now a days to help with creativity. Online lessons and workshops that can teach you how to write, draw, paint, take photographs, master calligraphy… the list is endless.

A few platforms that I like to use when I want to learn a new creative skill are Skillshare & Creative Live.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post. If you have any great tips or activities I’d love for you to please share them in the comments below .
