It may have taken me 6 months to get it to this point but Jeanie’s room is finally coming together and the gorgeous Lei Lei captured some of the nooks and special pieces that we have collected to create Jeanie’s own little space in our home.
There is still some work to be done, but here are some of my favourite details…
Personalised Artworks
One thing I knew for sure, when decorating Jeanie’s room, was that I wanted plenty of artworks from local creatives up on the wall. So far we have some lovely prints like the cute and personalised ‘J’ Alphapic* by V. Happy Co, a personalised artwork* by the super talented You and Me Prints, and a little guache floral original painting by yours truly.
I’m still looking to add a few more pieces by some of my favourite local artists like Jayne Branchflower and Georgie Daphne, as well as something by her illustrator dad, so watch this space!
Book Wall
When finding inspiration for Jeanie’s nursery I came across lots of wall libraries and just loved the way that the book covers double up as beautiful fun artworks themselves.
I also love the idea that we can alternate the books as Jeanie grows up, and that one day she can use the shelves to display her own artworks or favourite things. Our shelves are the FLISAT shelves from IKEA.
Furniture
The furniture in Jeanie’s nursery is a bit of a mish mash, but we kind of love it that way. To me it means nothing is too matchy-matchy.
Our cot is a lovely hand me down from Grange’s side of the family, the chest of drawers is the Cato design from Brosa, and the feeding/rocking chair is from trusty ol’ IKEA again. We also have the Kallax cube shelves from IKEA which are great for storing extra books and toys.
Sentimental Items
Some of my favourite pieces in Jeanie’s room are sentimental pieces that mean a lot to our family.
A really special and beautiful personalised wooden rattle engraved with Jeanie’s name and her first ever pair of shoes, kindly gifted to us by Grange’s cousins.
There is a pink 1950’s glass bowl which holds some fun wooden blocks and belonged to Grange’s nana Jean (who Jeanie is named after).
A musical box featuring twirling ladybugs was a piece we gifted our friend when she had a baby over 10 years ago. She held onto the piece as her daughter grew and gifted it back to us when Jeanie was on the way. How beautiful is that?
There is a crochet doily gifted to us by one of my best friends which belonged to her late mum. A woman who Grange and I loved very much.
And lastly, two pieces very close to my heart. A wooden doll house that Grange gifted me early in our relationship when I told him a sad tale of not owning the doll house of my dreams as a little girl growing up in Uruguay. And lastly a little thumb sucking monkey which belonged to me as a little girl and made it all the way to Australia from Montevideo.
Textiles
It’s probably no surprise that textiles play a big part in our home. I wanted to add little touches in Jeanie’s nursery to add warmth and comfort.
There is a large macrame wall hanging that used to feature in our bedroom, but Jeanie became so enamoured by it that it migrated to her room and now sits above her cot. A cute cushion in the ‘Hinterland’ design, painted by my friend Jayne Branchflower for Warwick Fabrics, and a beautiful personalised blanket by The Knit Studio, kindly gifted to us by my work.
A little snuggly friend called Banjo from Kippins and some comfy PJs by ergoPouch are the finishing touches to comfy textiles for bedtime slumber.
Growbright Matress
Ok, so I absolutely LOVED my Growbright pregnancy pillows* so much that when I was looking for a matress for Jeanie’s room I absolutely knew I had to have the Growbright Airnest*, and so I reached out to them for a collaboration. Did you guys see our cute video here?
There are genuinely many reasons why I wanted this matress in patrticular. Firstly, it is designed with optimal safety in mind to reduce SIDS factors, and it’s also ultra breathable, improving temperature regulation which helps to reduce the risk of overheating.
It’s also pretty light and easy to handle (for changing sheets etc), but also firm enough that it is safe for baby to sleep on. The perfect balance of firmness and comfort for babies.
But what took the cake was the fact that the airnest core is hypoallergenic and free from nasties. The matress itself is made from food-grade polypropylene, with no chemical-based foams or adhesives meaning no allergens, or off-gassing. The cover is Oeko-Tex class one, classified safe for babies. And this is all really important to us especially to avoid exacerbating Jeanie’s eczema.
Add to that the fact that the matress is 100% washable and 100% recyclable and you can see why this was top of our list. We were lucky enough to to be gifted this product as part of our collaboration but in my opinion it is worth every penny for the comfort and safety of your bub.
