The Black Dress

I’ve owned many a black dresses in my time. My wardrobe is predominantly a sea of black and navy, although I have recently ventured into introducing a little bit more colour into it.

A black dress is definitely a worthy wardrobe investment. It is the holy grail of must-have items in a woman’s wardrobe. Which is why I’ve decided to highlight this must have staple as my first style post for 2019.

The black dress should be that piece in the wardrobe that you can reach to in a sartorial crisis.  It should keep you from yelling “I have nothing to wear!!!” if you’ve been invited to an event last minute,  if you’ve ever left your outfit shopping to the last minute but want to ensure you get lots and lots of wear from your new purchase.

Have a work function to attend? dinner? Cocktails with girlfriends? party? A classic black dress should be able to be worn at any of these occasions and many more.

When searching for a black dress make sure you find a cut which flatters your body shape and you feel comfortable in. You want to be able to reach for it  when you are at your wits end, slip it on, and instantly feel fabulous.

I personally prefer less detail, nothing too sparkly or over the top attached to the dress itself. This means you can add statement pieces as needed with belts, jewellery and accessories to change things up. And never underestimate the power of a bold lip to finish off the look.

Today I am wearing my favourite black dress which I purchased from Kuwaii over 5 years ago. I wear this dress every single week – with a smart jacket to work, dressed up with heels and jewellery when I’m going out to dinner, or paired with sandals for the weekend.

What I also love about this dress is that it can be worn a few different ways, loose, tied to the front or to the back, making the piece extra versatile for optimum wearability.

Kuwaii remakes this style each year, and it has definitely proven to be a very timeless and versatile member of my wardrobe, even 5 years on. Proof that it is more about quality than quantity when it comes to style.

Vivienne Westwood’s infamous quote comes to mind each time I put it on… “Buy less, choose well, make it last”

So tell me, do you own a classic black dress? Where do you usually wear it? What’s your favourite way to style it? And would you like to see a few more ‘black dress’ styles, and how to wear them on the blog?
